So how does this relate to today's announcement at Google’s LatLong blog for Google MapMaker? Is it good or bad for OSM ...? While OSM is an "open collaboration between people all around the world that are trying to solve the problem of outdated and expensive maps for GPS systems" (quote), Google Map Maker gets bad welcome from the OpenGeoData blog "a kind of faux OpenStreetMap where they own all the data".

"If you contribute to Google MapMaker, you are contributing to one single map view that looks how Google wants it to look. If you contribute to OpenStreetMap, you are contributing to a myriad of possibilities … most not even thought of yet."

Sjors Provoost gets speculative for future options:

• Worst case: Google does not collaborate and we’ll have duplicate effort, which is not a problem because there is an astounding amount of disposable man power available on the planet.
• Best case: Google does collaborate and the OpenStreetMap project will be finished in a year or so.

Nevertheless - obviously Google (Maps) does have licence contracts with Navteq and Tele Atlas that simply hinder them from expanding inbound data with user generated map changes.

Why else would you bite hands that feed you?

In der aktuellen Ausgabe des SPIEGEL schreibt der geschätzte Manfred Dworschak unter dem Titel "Wikipedia der Navigation" ein schönes, langes und einsichtiges Stück dazu, wie eine wachsende grassroots-Bewegung interessierter Laien die Welt der Kartografie aufrollt.

Besorgen Sie sich den Artikel - er ist jede Zeile wert.

Als United Maps sehen wir OpenStreetMap als Bereicherung - als überfälligen Schritt in eine Demokratisierung kartografischer Daten. Ein perspektivisches Problem ist und bleibt die Vollständigkeit und Qualität der Datenerhebung. Selbst wenn hunderte, tausende von Freiwilligen mit GPS-Loggern durchs Land streifen werden: eine komplette und verlässliche Deutschlandkarte wird kaum entstehen können.

Unklar bleibt auch, ob und wie sauber die Daten topologisiert werden - Topologien sind die Grundlage für geographische Suchen und Zusammenhänge und Basis für multimodales Routing von der Straße in den öffentlichen Nahverkehr, auf den Gehsteig und zurück.

Die schiere Fläche, das Volumen der zu erhebenden Daten ist eine andere Größenordnung als bei einem Wikipedia-Ansatz. Der OpenStreetMapper muß sich durch jedes Unterholz schlagen, der Wikipedianer bleibt am warmen Schreibtisch.

CloudMade is an ambitious "mapping company created to professionalise and package geo data from OpenStreetMap, a global initiative to create a free, editable map of the world from user-generated input."

A great idea worth funding!

As United Maps starts to provide datasets for near-field pedestrian navigation, this is fascinating. Interesting to see how UGMC (user generated mapping contents - did we have this acronym already?) will cover areas beyond larger cities with an active crowd of GPS enthusiasts.
