With 945,6 km, the A7 is the longest German Autobahn and one of the heavily frequented transnational routes.

Starting at the danish border near Flensburg it leads on to Austria and further south.

The last missing part between Nesselwang and Füssen (near Neuschwanstein [nɔʏˈʃvaːnʃtaɪ̯n], the famous hut of the infamous Ludwig II) has been opened for traffic at Sept 1st 2009 (see the orange/white line on the montage. click for a larger view.).

Argleton is a place that doesn't exist - except on Google Maps.
The story is developing since about a week, brought up by The Telegraph:

Google and the company that supplies its mapping data are unable to explain the presence of the phantom town and are investigating.

Tantalisingly, “Argle” echoes the word “Google”, while the phantom town’s name is also an anagram of “Not Real G”, and “Not Large”.

One theory is that Argleton could have been deliberately added, as a trap to catch companies that violate the map's copyright, The Telegraph states. If that was true, statements beyond would contradict - as a mapmaker you'd better know where bogus data is. Google is clueless and Tele Atlas said it would now wipe the non-existent town from the map, quote:

"Mistakes like this are not common, and I really can't explain why these anomalies get into our database."

As the story from The Telegraph is from Oct31 it'll be intersting to see when Argleton will actually be "wiped". One more week?

This map, showing the estimated travel time to the nearest city of 50,000 or more people in year 2000 was made for the World Bank's World Development Report 2009 Reshaping Economic Geography. The message of the report can be summarised as: "As economies grow from low to high income, production becomes more concentrated spatially. Some places—cities, coastal areas, and connected countries—are favored by producers. ... The way to get both the immediate benefits of concentration of production and the long-term benefits of a convergence in living standards is economic integration." (WDR 2009, Overview).
